This year, as we celebrate Independence Day, we pause to give thanks—to God, and to the brave men and women who have fought for and defended the freedoms we enjoy in this country. One of the greatest gifts of American freedom is the ability to choose how we use our time, energy, and talent. In the United States, most of us can choose our work and choose to pursue a life of purpose. Choice requires responsibility and work.

 To help express this truth, we turn to the words of Maya Angelou, who said:

“Nothing will work unless you do.”

That’s the heart of the American spirit. Each of us is uniquely designed. And when people are free to choose the path that fits their unique design—when they commit to it with discipline and responsibility for their choices—they unlock the power to grow, contribute, and flourish.

Discipline, not just motivation, is what moves us forward. Motivation sparks the journey, but discipline sustains it—especially when the road gets hard. 

No other nation in history has offered more people the chance to choose their path than the United States. But opportunity alone isn’t enough. What we do with it—that’s up to us. Whether we rise to our full potential or live a life of mediocrity depends on our willingness to work hard and stay the course.

This Independence Day, we honor the men and women who bravely fought for our freedom. We honor the freedom that makes it possible to live with purpose, the discipline and responsibility that help us grow, and the opportunities that await when we choose to show up, stick to it, and do the work.
