Grateful Greetings July 4, 1990

Let us give thanks on this Independence Day that each generation does not have to invent the wheel. Thomas Jefferson was confirming Aristotle when he made happiness the end of life, virtue the basis of happiness, and utility the criterion of virtue.

This July 4th Greeting has been gleaned primarily from In Pursuit of Happiness and Good Government by Charles Murray, which sets forth the kind of understanding we must have to preserve and extend Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness in our free society. Sample, "An acceptable social policy is one that validates the individual's responsibility for...his behavior...A social policy that induces people to believe that they are not responsible for their lives is one that inhibits the pursuit of happiness and is to that extent immoral." For a confirmation of Murray's ideas see Aristotle's Four Avenues to Happiness.
