Grateful Greetings, July 4, 1978

Often we ask a child, "What are you going to be when you grow up?" This simple question infers that someday in some transforming manner the child is suddenly going to be something different from what he or she is today. We all know that achievements are not attained in this manner. What a different world we could occupy if every child, young person, and adult took seriously the thought that tomorrow I will be a different person.

Tomorrow I will be what I am today PLUS what I become today. Tomorrow I will be different. Imperceptibly? Maybe, but nevertheless different from today. Never again will I be the same as I am this moment. Will the experiences of this day cause me to more fully understand the world in which I live or will they cause me to be more skeptical, more withdrawn, more cynical? Tomorrow will I be more thankful to God for my blessings or more inclined to believe that I really deserve them as reward for my labors? Will I enter the world with a new resolve to protect freedom, banish justice, and serve mankind to my greatest capacity, or will I be an exploiter of people? Will today make me bitter or better?

At the end of all my todays, what will I have become? This I do not know, but one thing is certain: I will have gotten wherever I find myself one day at a time, and each day I will be something different from what I was the day before.

Tomorrow our beloved country will be what WE become.
